The University of Washington School of Nursing received a National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) grant, Building a Sustainable Indian Tribal Infrastructure for Translational Research, led by Dr. June Strickland and Dr. Rebecca Logsdon. The primary goals of the project are to strengthen the tribes’ ability to obtain research funding to meet their health concerns, provide teaching opportunities for our graduate and undergraduate nursing students, and offer a model of tribal /academic partnership that may benefit other colleges and universities and tribal communities.
This is a three year project that supports training for tribal members in two Coastal Salish tribes to conduct research and provides access to University of Washington resources such as libraries, statistical expertise, and training facilities. A second focus of training supported by the project is to assist School of Nursing faculty to develop effective approaches for conducting research with tribes. Finally, the project fosters linkages to community agencies through the creation of a Project Advisory Committee comprised of tribal representatives, community health agencies, and University of Washington faculty. Employing the principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR), the tribes, academic health center (the UW School of Nursing), and community agencies, are identifying tribal priorities for research in areas including (but not limited to): cancer screening and prevention, mental health, and/or promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles in older adults. Tribal members, students, nursing faculty, and experts from the UW are collaborating on research training and mentoring, providing both formal instruction and hands-on assistance in all steps of planning and carrying out a research study.
As part of our commitment to find funding opportunities to improve health within the tribes, grant opportunities from various government websites will be screened weekly to ascertain those that apply to the tribes’ health concerns. If you are a community agency and have or are aware of a funding opportunity for the tribes to consider, please contact Claudia Graves.
