School of Nursing Alumna Grethe Cammermeyer, '76, '91, has been a trailblazer for equal rights in the military. With the recent repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," Cammermeyer was finally able to win a fight started in 1989 when she came out as a lesbian.
Clinical Faculty member Bob Smithing discusses a recent study by Johns Hopkins University on mynorthwest.com, which finds that nursing care may be just as good as that of doctors. He explains the importance of the partnership between nursing and medicine to have the largest impact on healthcare delivery.

The Environmental and Policy Change (EPC) Clearinghouse, lead by PI Basia Belza, Professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems in the School of Nursing, recently won a 2011 APEX award for publication excellence.
Hilaire Thompson, Assistant Professor in BNHS, is featured in the 2010 Hartford Foundation Annual Report. A recent fellow of the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) program, Thompson is featured alongside 17 other BAGNC academic geriatric nurses, and her research is featured on page 58.
Linda Teri, prof., PCH and director of the Northwest Research Group on Aging was interviewed live on VoiceAmerica’s Family Caregivers Unite! on August 2. She discussed caregiver-support programs for Alzheimer’s disease patients.
The UW School of Nursing is pleased to announce its newest professorship recipients: Patricia Brandt, and Diane Magyary. Dr. Brandt is the recipient of the UW Medical Center Endowed Professorship, and Dr. Diane Magyary is the inagural recipient of the Kathryn E. Barnard Endowed Professor in Infant Mental Health.
Delilah Bruskas, School of Nursing PhD student, has received the University of Washington Tacoma 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award for her scholarly research and advocacy for foster children. She earned her M.N. degree from UW Tacoma in 2006.
Brenda Zierler, assoc. prof., BNHS was a presenter in an AARP and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation webinar titled "Preparing Health Professionals for Interprofessional Collaboration" on July 21. Her presentation, “lessons learned in preparing student health professionals for interprofessional collaboration at the University of Washington” offered perspectives on her extensive work in interprofessional education at the UW.
Drs. Carol Landis and Pamela Mitchell, both Professors in the University of Washington School of Nursing Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems, have been selected as winners of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) annual nurse researcher awards.
