Helping the Mother with Breast Cancer Support Her Children

Nurses at the University of Washington School of Nursing are studying the effectiveness of an educational program for mothers with a recent diagnosis of breast cancer and who have an 8-12 year old child. This program is available at no charge.

The Enhancing Connections Program includes a Program A or B

Program A:

  • Specially developed educational material mailed to the woman's home along with an educational phone call from a specially trained patient educator.

Program B:

  • Five educational sessions in the woman's home by a specially trained patient educator.

Women who agree to participate in the study will be randomly assigned to one of these two programs (like flipping a coin). Both programs offer an opportunity to learn new ways for mothers to assist their school age child with the breast cancer.

Women are eligible to participate if they:

  • Have a first time diagnosis of breast cancer (Stage 0, I, II, or III)
  • Were diagnosed in the past 6 months
  • Are married or in a stable, partnered relationship
  • Live in the Puget Sound Area
  • Have an 8-12 year old child who is aware of the diagnosis
  • Can speak and read English
