Ms. Blainey's research interests include 1)teaching patients self-management of chronic disease, (2)teaching health professionals management of diabetes mellitus and (3)clinical instruction in nursing.

In addition to guiding Master's students in thesis and projects, Ms. Blainey teaches undergraduate and graduate clinical courses, graduate courses in methods of teaching and an interdisciplinary course in management of diabetes mellitus.

In 1985 Ms. Blainey received the University of Washington School of Nursing Distinguished Teaching Award and the Rheba de Tornyay Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1999.
